6. New Caledonian Crows


Crows are thought to have the highest intelligence among birds, even more than parrots and cockatoos. Crows actually have a sense of cause and effect that is about the same as that of 5- to 7-year-olds! They are also quite good with tools. Many of them make hooks and probes out of sticks and other plants to pierce into the tops of palm palms. Crows can even solve puzzles that aren't too hard when they are given an incentive, like food. For example, a test that asked a crow to raise the water level in a tube to equal the second tube in order to obtain food.
