90% of Icelandic Woman Walked off the Job in 1975
In Iceland, there was a women's strike in late October 1975 as they battled for equal rights. The walkout caused around 90% of women to leave their occupations, which brought the whole country to its knees. Their male colleagues were shocked and couldn't keep the country operating with half of the people on strike. The Icelandic Parliament passed a rule that said men and women should be paid the same amount of money. They also elected a woman President within ten years.
The huge success of the strike illustrates how strong people can be when they work together. The woman asked for what they earned, and when they all just walked away from their jobs, it showed Iceland that they needed their women.
