Some youngsters just can't help but be smartasses. This kid may or may not have known the right answer to the question, but they chose to give a cheeky answer to the question "What ended in 1896?" The teacher probably didn't expect to see the answer "1895," but the kid did technically answer correctly!
Maybe this was just a last-ditch effort to put anything down. After all, we're all taught that any answer is better than no answer when we're not sure.
