A Beachgoer Stumbled Across This Rare Fish

Most of us expect to come across a few pretty seashells when weโ€™re on a beach walk. However, beachgoer Ben Eslef had quite the surprise when enjoying a nature walk at Crystal Cove State Park, Newport Beach, in California. He spotted this fish lying in the sand. The fish was identified as an 18-inch deep sea Pacific footballfish, a species of anglerfish. Although itโ€™s not a rare fish, seeing one still intact like this is unusual. Its teeth look terrifying! Known as predators, around 300 species of anglerfish live where sunlight is almost entirely absent: more than 3,000 feet below the Pacific Ocean's surface. That's pretty nuts, right?
